We Can Build a No-Kill Community
There are still an estimated 5 million cats and dogs dying in America's animal shelters every year – approximately 20,000 of those in Pima County alone. That means that about 60 percent of all dogs and cats entering Tucson’s animal shelters never make it out alive. At that rate, that’s more than 50 pets who lose their lives every day. These dogs and cats are counting on all of us to do better.
Killing cats and dogs in animal shelters does not have to be a “necessary evil.” It is within our power to eliminate the killing of healthy and treatable homeless pets, and we can no longer accept the excuses that perpetuate the status quo. There are already proven methods and models of success we can use to transform our community for the better.
The concept of community is key to our success. It will take all of us – an “army of compassion” – to accomplish our goals. No one will do it for us. Each of us needs to step forward and do what we can – donate, volunteer, spread the word, read, discuss, speak out, and demand change.
